Airborne over Hornchurch.

Today I finally got sone time to update this blog and put some hopefully interesting news on it.

for the last few weeks I have been trying various cameras on my Easystar Electric glider to get some onboard video and photos.

I normally use my trusty flycamone cameras to record any airborne footage but after years of abuse from high “g” planes and even High Powered Rockets they have finally died and so I had to find a replacement.

The first camera to try was the new Go-Pro Hero 5 Wide camera.

this is a small camera about the size of a box of matches and has a massive 170degree lens (fisheye). The quality is pretty good (just below VGA) but I am still waiting for a nice bright sunny day to really get the best of it.

you can see the first onboard video here

But my main new camera is the Traveler 5000, which is a small HD camera which Aldi sell for just £58 !

I was a bit unsure of this camera going by the price but I always wanted a HD camera so I just had to try it.

The camera is a palm camcorder so I had to cut a hole in my planes canopy to get the camera fitted.

but the plane looks good with the camera fitted and the C of G did not seem to be too badly effected so with a more powerful battery I gave the camera its first flight.

The flight was only a few minutes long as I just wanted to see how the plane handled the extra weight so kept the plane fairly low and just flew round the field.

you can see the footage from the flight below.

After I checked the footage and was happy I sent the plane up again, this time for a longer and higher flight, unfortunately the camera has a small toggle switch for macro photos, and this switch was turned on when I was putting the camera back in the plane so the whole flight was blurry. After a few swear words I have decided to put tape over the switch so hopefully it will never happen again.

Now I just need to have a nice bright sunny day with only light winds so I can really get some good footage.

until next time

Happy flying

Pete
